It's been awhile

Ok here is the scoop - A lot has happened since the last Post. Joey has moved to Portland and Lucas has gone to a warmer and preferably a warmer place (San Diego). It's been tough replacing those two, but the new Barista Blood in the House have been training hard to keep up the high level of hospitality and exceptional drink quality. Come in and have one of the current Baristas throw down a beautiful drink for ya'll. Meet Jessica, Bonde, Ian, Joey P, Ashlin, and Christos. Here is a little sample of what they can do already. See ya soon.

Scone alternatives at The Hub

So... we're scone-less at The Hub for the next couple of weeks. Our baker is on vacation. And we're doing just fine without her, thank you.

Therefore, donuts and fresh-baked cinnamon rolls. And cinnamon rolls baked on site in dutch ovens with fiery hot coals and lots of love! This morning was our f
irst try at the dutch oven bakery thing, and they tasted so dern good, yes.

Big thanks to Chris Rosamond for the home-made cinnamon rolls and his fancy river-guide cooking skills.

Update

A couple of new employees, Chris Bonde and Jessica Devine. Come say hello!

Check out the current coffee offerings. (----> over there ---->)

Single-origin espresso is back in action (at least it has been for about a week now). SOE means you're in for something special, something unique, and something explicit. In your face espresso. The luxury of a blend is the ability to fill in the gaps (lack of body, sweetness, acidity, etc.) with one coffee where another coffee in the blend may be missing the ball. With a SOE (single-origin espresso) you have an explosive representation of that specific coffee, in the raw, it is what it is. One may exhibit an immense sweetness, but be lacking in body or mouthfeel, for example. But it tastes dern good nevertheless. Come get it!

Weather in Reno is crazy! Not news to anyone really... same as it ever was (!). But thanks for sticking with us and keeping the garage packed and your bellies addicted to coffee!

The Hub featured @ FreshCup.com

Three updates in one day! Obviously I had a lot of catching up to do.

Check us out! We're making national news y'all. Fresh Cup Magazine is a national publication geared towards the specialty coffee and tea scene. Somehow they heard about us and hit us up for an interview. Now here we are, featured on their website as this month's Web Feature!

Puttin' Reno on the map!

Strictly coffee update

Check out the current offerings! (Right side of your screen!)

Easter update!

Hello Hubbers. I've been without a computer! So I'm going to use that as my excuse for not having updated the blog in a while...

Happy Easter! (to those whom it may apply) Things have been good at The Hub! Spring will soon be in full bloom, Reno will no longer be an icebox, the sun will be shining, and we can all kick it on the patio and sip on some tasty espresso.

For those of you that missed out, this last Wednesday we hosted our first musical event at The Hub. Michael Grant, of Endeverafter, was the official MC of the little acoustic show, and many of our other wonderful customers flocked to The Hub, instruments in hand, to play along. It was great! Cozy and intimate. I believe the weather kept a large amount of people from coming out to the show, but we're shooting for another in a time of warmer weather! (patiO!!!)

We've recieved a few new coffees from Barefoot Coffee Roasters as of our last update. Brand new Rwandan Kopakama! Come and get it. Is good! And while you're at it, grab a cup of the new Finca Vista Hermosa Peaberry. Oh so nice. Along with these two, we're occassionally brewing up the Brazil Daterra Redcab and the Sulawesi from the Sapan Collective. You can read about all of these coffee-growing countries, regions, farms, and the specific lots of coffee themselves at Barefoot's website www.barefootcoffee.com!

Intelligentsia is still keeping us stocked with wonderful Black Cat espresso. Yum. The blend has changed yet again: Brazil Fazenda Sertaozinho now pairs up with an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe from the Dama Cooperative. But it's still got that same great Black Cat-ness. Same as it ever was.

Tweakin' things a bit.

Quick update on the haps at The Hub!

So, I just got back from a wonderful little trip to Portland, Oregon... in my opinion, tasty coffee mecca. Anyhow, all bias aside, The Hub rocks! We can pull some espresso shots with the best of 'em.

With that said, I just wanted to make our loyal espresso drinkers aware of the recent tweak to each of our featured espresso at The Hub, The Boss, from Barefoot Coffee Roasters, and Black Cat, from Intelligentsia Coffee Roasters. The Boss blend has been simplified a bit: it is now a delectable mix of the Brazilian Daterra Redcab and the Sulawesi Sapan Minanga. Tastes like chocolate, tropical citrus, little earthen dusty hints... tastes AMAZING!

Intelligentsia's Black Cat is now a blend of a Bolivian and a Brazilian coffee... tastes a little less fruity as far as the sweetness, a little more as far as darker carmelized sugar flavors go, layer of chocolate and some herb to round it out. Tastes AMAZING!

Come in and try them both! They pair nicely with our fancy new pastries!!! Wonderful local social butterfly Hannah Candelario is baking us some goodies... little french cakes called gâteau, made with tasty cocoa and our very own espresso beans! Not to mention little almond cakes as well. And little filled crescent, of Jewish origin, called rugelach! We had some savory little guys with arugula, onion, and ham the other day... off the chain!

Stay tuned for more!

PNG Agoga. Yum.

Agoga Estate from Papua New Guinea, roasted by Intelligentsia.... went over so well today that I fell it deserves its very own blog post.

Dern good. One more time... just so dern good.

End of February already?!

Here we are in the last week of February. It's gone by so fast! Our apologies for not keeping up so well with the blog updates... better late than never.

February has treated us well. We had a nice Spring teaser with the beautiful sunshine and 60 degree days for about a week. Can't wait for it to become a little more permanent, because let's face it, our little garage can only hold so many thirsty customers... we want patio weather!!!

Last week's artist reception for February's artist, Nicholette, was a blast! We had a great turnout, despite the rain and colder temperatures, and the crowd grew as the night went on and the Irish coffees kept flowing. Thank you all for coming out to support Nicholette and The Hub. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for info regarding March's festivities... perhaps more Irish coffees to celebrate the already-locally-famous works of that month's artist. But who will it be? Hint: It won't help to scratch this itch... he's that good. (I hope I'm not the only one that will actually be able to figure that out)

-The crowd inside the shop... so many that we had at least double this number stuck outside in the rain! Troopers.

We've been serving up some single-origin espresso (SOE) again at The Hub! The Guatemalan Honey Michicoy from Finca Vista Hermosa, roasted by Barefoot Coffee Roasters, has been hot. Sweet, thick, and chewy mouthcandy in espresso form. Mmhmm. For those of you that don't already know, SOE costs $1 extra, but it's a sure way to experience something you just won't get anywhere else (even more so than the usual Hub fare). Have it straight up, throw it over some water for an SOE americano, or have it with milk in a latté or cappuccino! Better yet, try it any number of ways and see how you like it best.

With the beginning of March just a week away, we'll be introducing a few new coffees to the lineup. Stay tuned to find out just what those new coffees may be!

Best compliment ever.

As quoted on our Facebook (here):

"Dear Friends at The Hub, You have ruined my life. I have always loved coffee, but somehow, mediocrity didn't bother me that much. Even when it was glaring. Even when what I was drinking made me want to spit it out, like the scene in Mulholland Drive when the Italian producer is served espresso. Now your fine establishm ...ent has shown the way to the realm of Gods. If I may quote a friend of mine: "Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now." I am ruined. Now when I am out of Reno, I desperately search out any non-chain coffee establishment hoping, praying that maybe their product won't be utter rubbish. But I know, as soon as I see the clientele, the ineptly grinning "barista", the "specials" menu. This will be the same as the others. I would be better off popping an ibuprofen and slamming a sugar laden, liver rending energy drink. I drop my head in disgust as I receive my Holy Communion from The Devil in a styrofoam cup (who uses styrofoam anymore?). I swill their crap water at the counter so the service can see the look of disgust on my face. I try to keep it down as I run back to my truck to find my water bottle. What will become of my life? How will I ever find satisfaction or fulfillment? Must I stay in Reno forever?

Anyway, Thank you, I love you,"

-Ian Baker

No, Ian... thank you, sir.

Black Cat returns!

Here's the scoop:

We've been back and forth between the espresso blends available to us from our coffee roasters, Barefoot and Intelligentsia. The Boss from Barefoot has kept us more than happy since long before we opened The Hub 7 months ago.

Then we became curious... "Hmmm..." we said to ourselves,"I wonder 'bout that Intelligentsia." We just couldn't resist. Lovely stuff, really.

So here we are, having been back and forth between the two for a couple of months now, and we've finally arrived at a wonderful conclusion: Let's brew them both! Yeah... Why didn't we think of that first? Seems like a no-brainer now.

Swing by The Hub anytime, starting tomorrow, Friday the 29th of January, for a shot of The Boss, a shot of Black Cat, a shot of each?! Yay!

P.S. Keep your eyes and ears open for some single-origin espresso... it's a-comin'!

Saturday, January 23, 2010

One last test run.

Intelligentsia's Black Cat classic espresso is back at The Hub for the weekend. Just one last test run as we prepare to make it official.

We've had nothing but a positive experience with Black Cat so far. Customers love it. And we can't get enough ourselves. For this reason, starting this coming Friday, Black Cat will take top honors at The Hub. Alongside that, we'll be alternating between Barefoot's The Boss and many of their wonderful single-origin beans as alternate espressos for your choosing.

We can't wait!

Now tweeting @thehubcoffeeco!

After a long search, we've finally uncovered the case of the missing Twitter account.

Way back when, we created our Twitter account @thehubcoffeeco, and then we forgot everything we needed to use it (oh so many passwords...).

Our acute amnesia is no more. And we're rockin' and rollin' @thehubcoffeeco! So for those of you that have been following us on our interim account @TheHubReno, please make the switch! Or you'll be out of the loop.

Macaroons!

Tia's Sweet Treats' gluten-free macaroons are at The Hub!

Check out the write-up on Aimee and her tasty treats in Northern Nevada Business Weekly here: "Maker of gluten-free goodies hopes to carve niche"

We had a trial run of these goodies last week and they were a hit. Somewhere around 20 of these coconut-bombs sold in just one day! So we're running with it. Tia's Sweet Treats' gluten-free macaroons will be available round the clock as of this coming Thursday, the 21st of January. At just $3 a pop and a few different flavors to choose from, such as traditional, lemon, and chocolate, they make the perfect snack for anyone. And did we mention they're gluten-free? (Attention celiacs!)

Coffee Photography from Riley Maclean

We have the pleasure of serving many talented people at The Hub. Last Wednesday, we took one of those talented people, and made him take pictures of our coffee and shtuff! Well, it was really his idea. Exalt our coffee with his amazing photography skills? How could we ever say no?!

Riley Maclean is a die-hard photographer (and drinks way too many cappuccinos at The Hub... for this also, we thank him). He's very good at what he does, as you can see from our little collaboration of coffee artwork below. Sure we pour the lattés with the little hearts, but Riley helped us to take it to a whole new level with his camera magic. Thanks for the goods Riley!

Please check out Riley's website (www.rileymaclean.com) and peruse these and many other wonderful works!

And just in case you're wondering... no, we don't make layered mochas regularly at The Hub. But yes, all of our coffee tastes as good as Riley's photos make it look!

Saturday, January 9, 2010

Currently brewing at The Hub...

Check out the brew list to the right of the blog homepage. We have some amazing coffees in the line-up currently.

We brewed up Barefoot's Kenya Nyeri Kiawamururu for the first time this morning and it blew our socks off! Hot buttered popcorn and caramel? Seriously though. It's good. Tasty berry goodness, the one and only Ethiopia Sidamo Amaro Gayo from Barefoot, is also available. Yet another coffee that'll convert any syrup and sugar addict to a black coffee drinker. It's that good! Along with the Barefoot beans, we have the delicate and delectable Colombia Finca Santuario from Intelligentsia Coffee.

We're bringing back the single-origin espresso very, very soon. All our S.O. espresso fans can look forward to thick blueberry syrup in a cup when we get around to throwing Barefoot's Amaro Gayo in the espresso grinder. Stay tuned!

Keep your ears open and your eyes peeled, we'll be receiving a few new coffees from both Barefoot and Intelligentsia over the coming weeks. Allow me to plant this little bug in your ear: The Brazil Agua Preta from Intelligentsia will make you squeal (only in the best of ways, of course).

Friday, January 8, 2010

The Foot, The Boss, and Intelli, too!

So... we just couldn't say goodbye. We at The Hub want our cake, and we want to eat it too. Then we want some pie, a couple scoops of ice cream with chocolate sauce and colorful candy sprinkles!

I'll spare you all the pleasure of decoding the dessert talk. In short, The Boss espresso along with some of the wonderful single-origin coffees from Barefoot Coffee Roasters are back at The Hub. And they're here to stay. We just couldn't say goodbye for good to our first love and have therefore decided to play for both teams. What could be better than Barefoot or Intelligentsia coffee at The Hub? Why, Barefoot AND Intelligentsia at The Hub! (Yeah, you wish you had thought of it, right?)

Stay tuned for more details and updates as to the specific coffees we'll be rotating in and out over the coming weeks. But in the meantime stop by for a shot of The Boss, the tasty chocolate ganache fruit-bomb you all know and love!

January 2010

First off, Happy New Year and a belated Merry Christmas and all that wonderful holiday stuff. We hope everybody has made it through the holiday season with their sanity and their overall safety after travels and whatnot. Yay.

For those of you that have yet to experience the fantastic coffees we've been brewing up from Intelligentsia Coffee, currently roasted for us at their operation in Los Angeles, take your sweet time (just a figure of speech... of course we mean please come see us tomorrow morning). We will be continuing to brew up single-origin artisan roasted coffees from this wonderful company, and pulling their Black Cat Project Classic Espresso on the bar as well. Don't hesitate to check out the Intelligentsia Coffee website and read up on some of their very groundbreaking pratices in their coffee-purchasing realm.

Intelligentsia coffees from select origins will not only be available for you to purchase ready to enjoy at The Hub, but we have many of the same, if not all, of the coffees being prepared for you in the shop available in whole bean form for you to take home for your own preparation. Ask questions if you have any, and whoever is working the bar at The Hub will always be eager to help you find the perfect coffee for you.
